Programs & Activities
The Prairie Gazette is published quarterly for our members. Past issues can be downloaded here. Guest writers are welcome to submit stories, photos and general content about Lakewood history. Please contact us for information.

Programs are usually the 3rd Tuesday at 7 pm at the Lakewood Library and are free to the public unless otherwise noted.
January 19, Tues, 7 pm: Lt Charles Wilkes and the U.S. Exploring Expedition; Presenter: Dick Blumenthal, author of seafaring explorers of Puget Sound, will present his latest book on Navy LT Charles Wilkes. Wilkes four year mission culminated in celebrating the 4th of July in 1841 on what is now North Ft Lewis. The vast number of artifacts collected on the mission was the beginning of the Smithsonian Institution in 1858. Dick will autograph his books that will be available for sale.
February 16, Tues, 7 pm: Black and White and Re(a)d All Over: Presenters Nancy Covert, Steilacoom historian and Dave Sclair, last owner of Suburban Times, present the history of the early newspapers in the area to include the Lakewood Log. Bound volumes of local newspapers will be available for viewing.
March 23, Tues, 7 pm: A Journey of Thousands of Steps; Presenter: Bart Smith, “The Trail Guy”, Lakewood resident and photographer, has just completed hiking the 11 National Scenic Trails that took 17 years and 16,500 miles to complete. He will present a slide show from his vast files of photos he has taken during that time. He will also autograph his books that will be available for sale.
